Disembark the ship in Kobe, meet your guide and depart for the scenic slopes of Mount Rokko, a mountain range long admired for its natural beauty and once developed in the late 19th century as a retreat for foreign residents. Ascend via road and cable car to the summit, where sweeping panoramic views stretch across Kobe, Osaka Bay, and even as far as Kansai International Airport on clear days.

Begin at Fushimi Inari Taisha, a Shinto shrine dating back to the 8th century and dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice, prosperity, and business. Walk through the seemingly endless tunnels of vermilion torii gates—each donated by individuals or companies—creating one of Japan’s most iconic spiritual landscapes.

Continue to Arashiyama, a district that has been a popular retreat since the Heian period (794–1185), when nobles would visit for its natural beauty. This picturesque area remains known for its riverside views and tranquil atmosphere. In the afternoon, visit Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), originally built in the 14th century as a shogun’s retirement villa before becoming a Zen temple. Covered in gold leaf, the structure is reflected perfectly in the surrounding pond, symbolizing harmony between architecture and nature—a hallmark of Japanese aesthetics.

Return to Osaka in the early evening and enjoy dinner at your leisure.

DAY 3

Following breakfast, meet your guide and explore Osaka, a city with a rich merchant history and long known as “the nation’s kitchen” for its role as a center of trade and commerce.

Begin at the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living, where detailed reconstructions bring to life the streets and homes of the Edo period (1603–1868). Walk through recreated neighborhoods and observe how townspeople once lived, shopped, and interacted.

Continue to Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street, Japan’s longest covered shopping arcade, stretching nearly 3 kilometers. Originally developed as an approach to nearby Tenmangu Shrine, it remains a lively hub filled with local shops, eateries, and traditional businesses.

Conclude your tour at Osaka Castle, first built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan’s great unifiers. The castle played a pivotal role in the country’s feudal history. Today, its impressive structure, surrounded by massive stone walls and moats, stands as a symbol of Osaka’s historical importance.

Return to your hotel in the afternoon. The remainder of the day is at leisure with lunch and dinner on your own.

Upon disembarkation in Kobe, you will be met at the port and driven into Kyoto, Japan’s ancient imperial capital, where centuries of courtly elegance, sacred traditions, and exquisite design still shape the rhythm of daily life.

Your first visit is at Heian Jingu Shrine, a striking celebration of Kyoto’s imperial heritage. Announced by one of Japan’s largest vermilion torii gates, the shrine’s stately courtyards and brilliantly colored buildings evoke the grandeur of the Heian court. Built in 1895 as a partial replica of the ancient imperial palace, it honors the emperors who mark the beginning and end of Kyoto’s long reign as the nation’s capital. Behind the main sanctuary lie celebrated landscape gardens, where ponds, graceful bridges, and seasonal blooms offer a serene counterpoint to the shrine’s monumental architecture.

The journey continues to Nijo Castle, the storied Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period. Completed in the early 17th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castle is renowned for its imposing stone walls, encircling moats, and refined palace interiors that once projected the authority of the shogunate. Your afternoon features Tokyo Tower, the city’s iconic red-and-white landmark rising 333 meters above the skyline. From its observation levels, sweeping vistas stretch across the metropolis, revealing a mesmerizing patchwork of neighborhoods, parks, and waterways, and on clear days even distant Mount Fuji. Long a symbol of postwar Tokyo, the tower offers a classic perspective on the vast energy and ambition of the capital.

From there, continue to Ginza, Tokyo’s most polished enclave of luxury shopping, fine dining, and contemporary design. Along elegant Chuo-dori and the district’s stylish side streets, international fashion houses, storied department stores, and architecturally striking flagship boutiques create a scene of cosmopolitan sophistication. Unlike the wooden temple architecture often associated with Japan, this remarkable sanctuary—rebuilt in 1934—draws inspiration from ancient Buddhist forms seen across India and Asia, with lotus motifs, carved animal figures, stained glass, and a sweeping, sculptural roofline. Inside, the atmosphere is unexpectedly serene and grand, blending spiritual calm with an almost cinematic sense of scale.

After the temple visit, continue to the famed Tsukiji Outer Market, where Tokyo’s culinary heartbeat is on full display. This lively maze of seafood stalls, specialty purveyors, and traditional shops offers an authentic introduction to Japanese food culture, from glistening cuts of tuna and seasonal shellfish to artisanal ingredients and beloved local delicacies. There are about 30 steps leading to the hall of Amida Buddha but there is a ramp just to the left of the main stairs. The main hall is a no-photo zone, as this temple is aiming to create a meditative, undistracted space for prayer and reflection.

All land programs are capacity controlled and subject to availability. Programs falling under the minimum number of required participants are subject to cancellation. Pricing listed is also subject to change to meet unexpected cost increases for transportation, land arrangements or currency fluctuations. Once purchased, pricing is guaranteed and not subject to change. Land Programs must be purchased no later than 90 days prior to your sail date. Cancellations made within 90 days or less prior to the sail date are subject to 100% cancellation penalty. There are no refunds for unused portions of any program.
