Regent Seven Seas Cruises is proud to partner with FOOD & WINE TRAILS, America’s foremost culinary travel company, in the offering of this tour. F&WT tours are always kept intimate and visit sites not typically offered by mainstream travel suppliers. Their tours are always led by a knowledgeable, English-speaking sommelier, wine or food expert, cooking instructor or chef, who enjoys introducing visitors to some of the best and most authentic food and wine of their region.
Led by Food & Wine Trails’ local wine and culinary expert, you’ll experience the effects the eruption of Mount Vesuvius had on the past and present during a visit to a mountain winery and the ruins of two ancient Roman villas.
On 8月24日, AD 79 in the Italian region of Campania, the earth began to shake and Mount Vesuvius erupted, altering life and land forever. When you arrive in Sorrento, you’ll tender to the pier and meet your guide, a local food and wine expert, who will share with you the history of the region and how the effects from that one event in AD 79 can still be felt today.
You begin the day with a guided tour of what remains of two ancient villas from the Roman town of Stabiae. An article that appeared in the Smithsonian described the ruins of Stabiae as, "the largest concentration of well-preserved elite seafront Roman villas in the entire Mediterranean world." Believed to be summer homes of the Roman elite, each villa boasts more than 110,000 square feet of space, with multiple dining rooms that overlook the sea, private heated baths, decorated gardens and huge colonnaded courtyards. Only recently excavated, you can still see the existence of an ancient water heating system, mosaic floors and structure walls decorated with beautiful frescoes.
From Stabiae, you will drive up the southern face of Mount Vesuvius to the winery and home of the Sorrentino family. The Sorrentino’s have been making wine on this land for more than a century. You will immediately feel like one of the family as they greet you at the door with open arms. A member of the family will walk you through the vineyards and describe in detail the effects the volcanic soil has on growing grapes, as well as the other fruits and vegetables planted on their land. Back in the family kitchen, other members of the family prepare a multi-coursed lunch of local specialties and traditional dishes served with a selection of their highly rated wines.
This tour is operated by the award winning, culinary and wine tour specialist Food & Wine Trails.

Walking through the city, which was buried in ash from the devastating volcanic eruption in 79 A.D., you will gain great insight into what ancient life must have been like here. Time seems frozen, as you observe the eerie plaster casts of numerous victims who are caught in their final moment of life as you peer inside homes and shops suspended in time by the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
