From the port, you will drive northwesterly to reach Paleokastritsa on the West Coast. This is perhaps the most picturesque area on the island with its wooded hills and sheltered bays.
A visit is made to the Monastery of Paleokastritsa, which was originally founded in 1225. The present building dates from the 18th and 19th century and is a fine example of an arcaded cloister. Its small museum houses an interesting collection of Byzantine icons.
On the return journey, a brief stop is made at the area known as Kanoni. This vantage point offers magnificent views over the bay to Mouse Island and the tiny convent of Vlachernae. Our tour ends with a stroll through Corfu Town with its Parisian arcades, Italian architecture, and English cricket square. You may choose to remain in town to further explore on your own or return to the ship.
ご注意：There is a strict dress code for churches and monasteries; shoulders and knees must be covered. No shorts for men or women. This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking.
Departing from the port, your coach follows the road leading out of town. Soon you are in the lush Corfiot countryside. Kerkyra is the most verdant of all the Greek Islands and this becomes at once apparent as you are driven through orange, lemon, cypress and olive groves interspersed with vineyards and fields carpeted with beautiful wild flowers, like a garden in paradise which has been decorated by the Gods themselves.
Approximately 20 minutes later you reach the old traditional village of Gastouri and enter the Achilleion Palace, built by the Empress Elisabeth "Sissy" of Austria in 1891, and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. You visit the rooms in the palace, as well as its beautiful gardens offering a spectacular view over the Ionian Sea. The gardens, full of exotic trees and flowers which the empress brought with her from her trips around the world, are adorned with classical statues, as she was very fond of ancient Greek history and mythology. The main Terrace of the Muses, decorated with statues of the Nine Greek Muses and the imposing figures of Achilles Victorious and Achilles Dying, are some of the most interesting.
Leaving Achilleion Palace, your coach takes you to Corfu Town passing by the coastal resort of Perama, from where you will enjoy some excellent views of the Convent of Vlacherna and picturesque Mouse Island. Seize this photo-stop opportunity to test your camera skills on this view - the most photographed location on the island.
Once in the Old Quarter of Corfu, the coaches drop you off in front of the 14th-century Old Venetian Fortress, (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), opposite the central Esplanade Square. While your coach waits for your return, your guide takes you on a beautiful walking tour of the historic center of the Old Town. Walking around in the maze of narrow winding cobbled streets known as kandounia, you visit some of the most elegant quarters of this Venetian-built town, which competes with Naples, Florence and Venice in terms of beauty, style, character and charm.
Walking along the old cricket grounds you will see the Royal Palace of St. George & St. Michael, an imposing building built entirely of yellow Maltese stone by the first British Commissioner of the island. View the spectacular arcades of the Liston Piazza, a down-sized replica of the Rue de Rivoli of Paris, built by the French in the 19th century before heading into the heart of the old town. You will also view from the outside, the 300-year-old Church of Saint Spiridon and then explore the old flea-market, pass by the old Town Hall and lastly, find yourself in the busy shopping district, where you will have some free time for shopping.
Following your tour in town, it is time to board your coach for your return to the ship.
ご注意：Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes for this tour which involves moderate walking and approximately 80 steps in total to climb at Achilleion Palace.
Explore a centuries-old Venetian fortress overlooking Corfu’s Old Town and then savor a selection of traditional Greek dishes and delicacies at a waterfront restaurant.
After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief but scenic drive through Corfu and on into the Old Town. UNESCO has designated this district as a World Heritage site because of the authenticity and integrity of the urban fabric and its fortresses of Venetian origins.
The town’s so-called Old Fortress was constructed on a rocky promontory in the 15th century on the site of a former Byzantine castle. As you explore this restored fortification, be sure to notice the Venetian symbol on the arched entrance and a small chapel nearby, where prisoners were once held in chains before being executed. Beneath the fortress lies a maze of tunnels, some of which lead to the top of the promontory.
The British destroyed many of the original Venetian structures and constructed their own within the Old Fortress; the most prominent being the Church of St. George. Although it looks like an ancient Doric temple with six stout columns in front, the church only dates to 1840. The interior was reconstructed following damage suffered in World War II.
Just behind the Old Fortress, you will find the Sailing Club, where you will enjoy local delicacies and wine. The restaurant overlooks a small marina and specializes in Mediterranean seafood dishes. After dining at the club, you will return to the pier.
ご注意：This tour includes approximately 1 hours of walking over uneven surfaces. There is also approx.10 steps to negotiate; it is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.
Corfu, as a playground for Europe's aristocracy, has many beautiful palaces. You will journey from the port away from the city area and into the fertile area of orange and lemon groves to visit the Achilleion Palace. Originally built for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, she was assassinated a few years after it was completed. It was then purchased by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. The gardens adorned with statues and the views over the densely wooded countryside are magnificent.
Continue to the Mon Repo Palace which was built in 1828 for the second British Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, Sir Frederic Adam. It has a large garden with a wide variety of trees and other exotic plants brought by Lord Adam from England and throughout the Commonwealth. In 1864, it was donated to the Greek Royal family who usually spent their summer holidays at Mon Repo, until the last king, Constantine, after a referendum in 1974, went into exile in England. Following the visit, your coach will return to the pier.
ご注意：This tour includes over 2 hours of walking and/or standing, at times on uneven ground and marble surfaces. Also includes approximately 40 steps. It is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or guests with mobility concerns. Hats and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Tour a centuries-old estate in Corfu’s fertile interior and sample wines paired with organic delicacies that reflect the owners’ passion for preserving traditional methods of production.
After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief but picturesque drive into the interior of Corfu, a fertile agricultural area that inspired the island’s nickname—the Emerald Island. You will soon arrive at the Ambelonas estate, where you will be welcomed with a cup of herbal tea that is highly regarded for its refreshing, restorative qualities.
During the tour that follows, you walk through the estate’s vineyard with one of the owners and learn about the two varieties of grapes that are grown at Ambelonas: red skopelitiko and white kakotrygis. You will also see the grove of olive trees that have been cultivated here for more than 400 years.
In the adjoining olive oil and wine museum, you will browse exhibits of traditional devices once used for making both products. You might see oak barrels, bottling tools, measuring containers, a stone olive mill and a cast-iron olive press.
The highlight of the visit to Ambelonas will be a tasting of wines thoughtfully paired with delicacies prepared on the estate. The exact dishes will be chosen the day of your arrival, based on the freshest available seasonal ingredients.
Before returning to the pier, you will also enjoy free time to take in the beautiful setting and shop for products such as organic vinegar and sweets in the estate’s store.
ご注意：ご注意：This tour includes easy walking at times on uneven ground at the Ambelonas Wine Estate. There is also approx.5 steps to negotiate; it is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.
