  • Corsican Wine Discovery

Savor several of Corsica’s most traditional and iconic wines at a tasting, while listening to an expert explain the characteristics of the locally grown wines.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at one of the most celebrated wine shops on the island. The store carries hundreds of bottles of wine, many of them the finest, most distinctive Corsican wines.

During the tasting that follows, you will learn about the growing conditions that affect Corsican wine. In particular, the weather is Mediterranean, and there are more days of sunshine and less rain than on mainland France. Many of the key wine districts are on the island’s west side so, chances are, the wines you sample will have been produced locally.

Winemaking has flourished on Corsica for nearly 2,500 years. The red wines are principally made with sciaccarellu and niellucciu grapes. The vermentinu grape is used in most whites, and muscat grapes grown farther north are traditionally used for sweeter wines.

You will have the opportunity to taste three different Corsican wines, each with its own characteristics. All the while, the wine expert will extoll the virtues of the different vintages and answer questions you may have about the history of Corsican wine and how it compares to other French wines.

Following your tasting session, you will have time to shop for a favorite vintage before returning to the pier.

  • Imperial Town

Take a charming walking tour through Ajaccio, known as Imperial Town because Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was born here and the family’s influence is still evident.

After walking directly from the pier, you will soon enter the heart of Old Town, which overlooks a lovely sweeping bay. In the 2th century, the Romans founded a settlement just north of here, but it was eventually destroyed and Ajaccio flourished in its wake.

Before long, you will pass the neo-classical town hall in a square dominated by a statue of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born in Ajaccio in 1769. Continuing down one of the city’s first streets, aptly renamed Rue Bonaparte, you will see the emperor’s birthplace. It is now a museum that you might visit, depending on the day and time. Although the house is rather unadorned, the period furnishings are magnificent.

Another memorial to the Bonaparte family awaits you in the Place de Gaulle. A statue of the emperor on horseback surrounded by his brothers rises gracefully from the square, with the beautiful bay in the background. Continuing on along pedestrian-friendly Rue Fesch, you will see a palace that Napoleon’s maternal uncle ordered to be built.

Now a museum, it features exhibits and rooms devoted to the imperial family and more impressively the second-largest collection of Italian paintings in France. Works from four centuries are on display, including ones by Botticelli and Titian.

After browsing, you may remain in town or walk back to the pier with the guide.

ご注意:This tour includes 2-hours of easy to moderate walking/standing. There will be steps and uneven surfaces to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach, and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. The tour may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Dependent upon the day of week and time, there may be only one museum visit, which will be either the Maison Bonaparte Museum or the Fesch Museum. Restrooms are available in the museums only.

  • The Perfumed Isle and Prunelli River Gorges

Sit back and relax on this driving tour of Corsica’s spectacular interior, a land little changed over the centuries, especially around the steep Prunelli Gorges and nearby villages.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a drive into Corsica’s picturesque interior, passing through the village of Cauro. The landscape in this region is mesmerizing, as it is beautifully rugged, covered with forests and quite mountainous. Dense shrubbery known as “maquis” blankets much of the countryside. The evergreen is extraordinarily fragrant because it is composed of a variety of plants that includes lavender, myrtle and wild mint.

Along the way, you will also see a small vineyard and a few cultivated fields before reaching the Pineta Forest. Here the vegetation changes considerably, as it is dominated by laricio pines, chestnut and beech trees. The terrain steepens dramatically at the Prunelli Gorges, an elevated area with stunning panoramic views of the jagged granite walls.

The road twists and turns on the descent into the gorges, eventually straightening near the bottom, where you will catch a glimpse of serene Tolla Lake. The lake is manmade and supplies Ajaccio with hydroelectric power. A brief photo stop offers yet another perspective of the gorges and the surrounding terrain.

Just past the ridge-top village of Tolla, sharp pinnacles emerge from the forest and the fertile valley below widens and comes into view. On the return to Ajaccio, you will pass several other villages, including Ocana, known for its austere granite homes.

ご注意:This tour is primarily panoramic in nature with walking at the guests' discretion durin the stops. • Highlights of Ajaccio

Admire the considerable charms of Ajaccio and its outskirts on this driving and walking tour that concentrates on the influence of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive around Ajaccio, passing several extraordinary churches, the former English quarter and a number of monuments to Napoleon Bonaparte. The French emperor was born here in 1769. Napoleon’s influence is still felt and his image is seen throughout Ajaccio, which is known as Imperial Town.

A statue of Napoleon wearing a riding coat and his famed two-cornered hat is the centerpiece of Austerlitz Square, where you will stop for photos. Legend has it that Napoleon played near here as a child and pretended to be the French emperor.

Then, after driving along a delightful coastal road, you will return to the oldest section of Ajaccio for a leisurely walking tour. Near the neo-classical town hall, another statue of Napoleon will greet you, an indication of his lasting significance.

Continuing down one of the city’s first streets, aptly renamed Rue Bonaparte, you will pass Napoleon’s birthplace. Now a museum, the rather unadorned house offers a glimpse into life centuries ago as it is beautifully furnished with period pieces.

You will also see the modest cathedral where Napoleon was christened and yet another statue of the emperor in the Place de Gaulle. Upon reaching pedestrian-friendly, shop-lined Rue Fesch, you may remain in town to browse or follow your guide back to the pier.

  • Scenic Vizzavona & Corsican Snacks

Explore the pristine mountainous terrain that covers much of Corsica’s interior, taking in the natural beauty and stopping to snack on local delicacies.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a drive into the island’s picturesque interior. The landscape is mesmerizing, as it is beautifully rugged, covered with forests and quite mountainous. Dense shrubbery known as “maquis” also blankets much of the countryside. The evergreen is extraordinarily fragrant because it is composed of a variety of plants that includes lavender, myrtle and wild mint.

In time, you will pass through the village of Bocognano, which sits on a plateau surrounded by chestnut trees, and then continue into the Vizzavona forest, which is comprised mostly of beeches and pines. This wooded area is sparsely populated, but attracts plenty of outdoor enthusiasts who come for the natural beauty and inspirational hikes.

The forest was once famous as the longstanding hideout for two brothers who were bandits and folk heroes in the late 1880s. One brother finally surrendered at age 75 at the train station that is still here; the other brother remained at large for another 10 years.

You will experience a bit of local life while stopping for a snack of smoked ham, sausages and goat cheeses, accompanied by a glass of red wine. The selection of locally made foods reflects what is traditionally served to workmen for their mid-day meal. After snacking, you will enjoy some free time before returning to the pier in Ajaccio.
