  • Safed, Kibbutz Visit and the Golan Heights

A truly distinctive experience exploring the heart of the Upper Galilee awaits you on this full day tour that combines the charm of Safed, the historically significant Golan Heights and the chance to witness first-hand a slice of everyday life in a kibbutz.

Boarding your coach at the pier, you'll first travel to the northern Israeli town of Safed via the famous route that was described in James Michener's book, "The Source". Located 3,200 feet above sea level in the mountains of the Upper Galilee, this somewhat modest-sized community is also the highest city in Israel with magnificent commanding views east to the Golan Heights, north to Mt. Hermon and Lebanon, west to Mt. Meron and the Amud Valley, and south to Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee. Historical sources indicate that Safed was founded in the 2nd century AD during Roman times and local legend is that the city was founded by one of Noah's sons after the great flood. During the 13th century, it became the center for many Jewish scholars who founded the Zohar and Kabala theories. Today, Safed has seen a rebirth and resurgence of popularity, becoming once again a center for Jewish learning. This utterly charming mountain enclave with its quaint cobblestone streets has also gained a reputation as being a haven for artists. Your time in Safed includes a visit to the town's vibrant artist colony as well as the ancient Synagogue Quarter.

Leaving Safed, your coach will make its way down from the mountains toward the Sea of Galilee, along the way passing Kurazim, a village that was famous during the time of the Second Temple, the Mishna and the Talmud. Enjoy a picturesque view of the tranquil waters as you travel along the shore before crossing the Jordan River and ascending to the Golan Heights. During Roman times and throughout the Byzantine period, cultural and religious centers flourished here and permanent Jewish settlements, including Kfar Harub, existed until the Islamic conquest. Kfar Harub has since become Kibbutz Kfar Haruv, which was resettled by Americans in 1973. After a guided tour of the kibbutz, a special luncheon experience awaits you as you join the members of the kibbutz during their own lunch break. As you help yourself to the typical kibbutz menu, you'll also enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Sea of Galilee, Tiberias and the Jordan Valley.

The afternoon segment of your tour includes a scenic drive through the countryside, passing Hamat Gader, known for its hot springs and for being the international point where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Israel meet. A final stop will be made at the Yardenit baptismal site where the Jordan River separates from the Sea of Galilee. In this naturally scenic and symbolic setting, pilgrims from around the world come to perform baptismal ceremonies. During the relaxing journey back to the ship, your coach will travel through Tiberias where you will pass by Beit Shearim, the well-known 2nd century Jewish burial ground.

ご注意:The sights on this tour are not wheelchair accessible and therefore, it is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive through Haifa, a city known for its religious tolerance and cultural mosaic. As you ascend Mt. Carmel, the enormity of the city will begin to unfold, presenting you with a sweeping view all the way to the sea.

Mount Carmel was first settled in prehistoric times and has been occupied by various groups ever since. Mount Carmel has great religious significance and one of its most recognized symbols is the golden-domed Shrine of the Bab, where the prophet-herald of the Bahá’í faith is buried in the Bahá’í Gardens.

As you walk the paths and terraced staircase, you will learn how the immaculate gardens are maintained, the origin of the Bahá’í faith and the reasons why UNESCO has designated the shrine and gardens a World Heritage site. The shrine is a blend of eastern and western styles, which symbolizes the faith’s emphasis on unity.

Continuing on, you will soon arrive at the 19th-century Stella Maris Monastery and church, which serves as the world center for the Roman Catholic Carmelite order of monks. The church is built over a cave that the prophet Elijah is said to have inhabited. Look for the symbol of the Order which is mounted above the entrance to the monastery: a cross on top of Mount Carmel and above it, the sword of Elijah.

After taking in the magnificent views, you will return to the pier, passing through a restored 19th-century colony that German Christians founded.

  • Mystical Masada, Desert Brunch & Dead Sea

Explore the desert fortress of Masada, where Jewish zealots famously defied Roman troops in the first century, and then relax over brunch and enjoy a dip in the buoyant Dead Sea during this tour created especially for Regent’s 2016 Reunion Cruise.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a hauntingly scenic early morning drive inland toward the Negev Desert. The desert’s name, which means “to wipe dry,” is highly appropriate, as its arid terrain is marked by limestone and erosion craters surrounded by high cliffs. Remains of early settlements are abundant throughout the stark, but beautiful landscape.

The journey to Masada is approximately three hours, during which you will enjoy a boxed snack prepared by the ship. This rugged natural fortress where Jewish patriots famously defied the Roman army in 73 A.D. was originally built as a palace by Herod the Great, King of Judea. It has since become a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortifications and attack ramp surrounding the mountaintop monument are the world’s most complete Roman siege works and of great historical value.

You will ascend to the Masada mountaintop by cable car, which offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding desert. Upon arriving, you might tour Herod’s three-tiered palace, the synagogue, baths and cisterns, all of which are still considered spectacular engineering feats.

Following your visit, you will descend back to the desert floor and head back toward the Dead Sea. A short distance away from Masada, you will stop and enjoy a light traditional Druze meal under the cover of a deluxe tent erected just for our guests. Relax and take in in the natural setting of the desert before continuing on to the Dead Sea. Upon arrival, you’ll have approximately ninety minutes of free time to relax at one of the Dead Sea resorts. Those who wish may take this opportunity to swim in these famed waters, much like Herod and Cleopatra did. The water is comprised of as much as 35% dissolved salts, making it easy to float on the surface. At the end of your visit, you will re-board your coach and travel back to the ship in Haifa.

Traveling by coach from Haifa, you'll first make your way to the northern Israeli town of Safed by traveling along the famous route that was described in James Michener's book, "The Source". Located 3,200 feet above sea level in the mountains of the Upper Galilee, this somewhat modest-sized community that is the highest in Israel, commands magnificent views east to the Golan Heights, north to Mt. An enjoyable tour of the winery and a wine tasting are included during your visit.

Leaving the mountains behind, it's a picturesque drive along the shores of the Sea of Galilee before stopping for a relaxing buffet lunch at a local hotel. Following lunch, you'll cross over the Jordan River and ascend the Golan Heights.
