In the laid-back town of Lecce, explore medieval churches between basking on the most picturesque beaches in Puglia. Visit the Chiesa di San Pietro, a small church with stunning Byzantine frescoes, and the fifteenth-century Castello Aragonese, whose imposing walls acted as one of Otranto’s main defenses against invaders. For sun-seekers, head north to fall in love with the shore of Baia dei Turchi. Also nearby is the Laghi Alimini, large lakes which also offer views of the sea, and to the south is the picturesque rocky inlet of Porto Badisco. Legend has it that Porto Badisco was where Aeneas first set foot on Italian soil on arrival from Carthage.
