Explore the Roman amphitheater in the spectacular World Heritage site Arles and then visit the psychiatric hospital that treated the city’s most famous resident, Vincent Van Gogh.

After departing from the pier in a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, you will settle in for a relaxing and wonderfully picturesque drive through the Provence countryside. Upon arriving in Arles, you will soon discover why UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site for the way Arles transitioned from an ancient Roman city to a medieval European civilization.

There are architectural examples from both periods, most prominently the two-tiered Roman amphitheater and subterranean galleries in the center of town. As you tour this 1st-century site, which could hold up to 20,000 spectators, the guide will elaborate on its original use as an entertainment venue for chariot races, theatrical spectacles and gladiatorial battles.

Nearby, you will explore the Place de la Republique, a charming square with an obelisk from the Roman amphitheater at its center. The medieval Church of St. Trophime overlooks the square. It was built over a much older basilica dedicated to St. Stephen and has long been an important pilgrimage site.

Following free time in Arles, where you may shop and dine on your own, you will visit Espace Van Gogh, the psychiatric hospital where the tormented painter Van Gogh was admitted in 1888. While convalescing, he painted the courtyard, which has been reconstructed to look as it did when captured it in his work “Le Jardin de l’Hôtel-Dieu.”
