Explore two classic Provençal villages, one a celebrated pottery center, the other renowned for its sweet nougat treats. Originally fortified, Le Castellet still looks somewhat imposing and you will enter through one of two ancient gates. One of the best views of the countryside is from the hilltop castle that now houses the town hall. An even older landmark is the 12th-century Church of Saint-Sauveur, which you will also see before enjoying free time to shop for ceramics and colored tiles. The nearby village of Ollioules is equally charming, especially its ancient quarter, where excavations are often in progress. As you walk through the winding atmospheric streets, you can’t help but feel a sense of history, which the guide will enhance with enlightening commentary. Ollioules is also acclaimed for its nougat, and a factory tour will reveal how the confection is made. You may sample nougat flavored with hazelnut, raspberry, figs or other locally grown products.
