Explore the grand residence of the former Dukes of Mecklenburg in the fairytale city of Schwerin and walk through the heart of Wismar, whose medieval architecture earned the city a UNESCO World Heritage site designation. Inside the 635-room Schwerin Castle, you may browse the heavily gilded dining hall, the lavish floral room and ceremonial rooms now used to exhibit art, weaponry and jewelry. The castle gardens are equally impressive. You will view other architectural treasures such as the 19th-century Mecklenburg State Theater and the Gothic-style cathedral while walking to your dinner venue. Strolling through Wismar in the evening will reveal its distinctive brick architecture that dates to medieval times when it was a major Hanseatic League trading center. Wismar’s first brewery opened in 1452 and the city is still synonymous with great beer. Mumme, a strong dark beer from that time, is still brewed and you may sample it at a historical microbrewery.
