The lively harbor city of Rostock, was founded nearly 800 years ago and has a rich ship building and fishing history. Walking through the city center, you will observe its wonderful old towers, looming fortifications, gabled houses from the 15th century, lovely churches and abbeys. Stop for photos at landmarks such as the Fountain of Joy, University building, Holy Cross Convent, library (old merchant house) and the New Market.

During your tour of Rostock, visit the impressive St. Mary’s church home to the oldest astronomical clock in Northern Germany, which still works with its original over 500-year-old parts.

You will also enjoy a few minutes of free time to do some shopping, and stop at a microbrewery where you can sample freshly made German beer and a pretzel.

Helpful Hints

  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as needed.
  • This tour includes approximately 2-hours of walking/standing on mostly flat surfaces and a few steps to negotiate. Tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair and are able to make their own way on and off transportation. Guests must be self-sufficient or if assistance is required, they should travel with a companion who can provide this. Guided visit of St. Mary’s will not be possible during religious services; in this case, your guide will provide commentary from the outside and you will enter on your own. It is suggested to bring Euros, as not all shops accept US currency or credit cards. All shops are closed on Sundays. As tour visits a place of worship, please wear non-revealing, conservative attire that covers knees and shoulders.
