Ride a ferry across Foyle Bay, take a drive along a breathtaking coast road, view crumbling Dunluce Castle and walk the geological curiosity known as the Giant’s Causeway. This multifaceted voyage delivers outstanding scenery pretty much from start to finish, and the day’s star attraction is so unique and mythic, it’s inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. From the pier, the ferry ride brings you to Magilligan Point, home to a three-story tower built to guard against French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. Then it’s on to a panoramic coach journey along the Scenic Causeway Road, an epic stretch of highway that ranks near the top of any list of the world’s most impressive coast drives. A stop will give you time to admire the photogenic ruins of Dunluce Castle, an ancestral clan headquarters abandoned after it partially fell into the sea in 1639. Soon, you’ll arrive at the Giant’s Causeway visitor’s center for a brief multimedia intro, then be shuttled out to stroll this trail of some 40,000 strangely geometric stone columns for yourself. And to discover that it really does look exactly like a giant’s stepping-stone walkway skirting the Atlantic waves and weathered sea cliffs.
