Become surprisingly familiar with Oslo in a relatively short time by visiting the premier attractions that present a historical and cultural perspective of Norway’s exuberant capital. The first highlight will be the magnificent Royal Palace, home to the royal family since the mid-19th century. The surrounding parkland and gardens reflect European horticulture of that time period, making for a spectacularly serene setting. You will also see the Oslo Opera House, a contemporary marble-and-glass structure that is a work of art itself, and the city hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually. Brief stops at the medieval Akershus Fortress, Holmenskollen ski jump and Vigeland sculpture park add more texture to your understanding of Oslo. A collection of historical buildings from the Middle Ages to the 20th century are on display at the Norsk Folkemuseum. You will find everything from sod-roofed farmhouses to a stave church from the 1200s.
