Wander about the ruins of Herculaneum, which the eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed along with Pompeii, and enjoy a driving tour through Salerno. Fortunately for archaeologists, Herculaneum was buried under as much as 60 feet of volcanic ash and mud, which preserved it. While proceeding through the streets, you can expect to view elaborate bath houses decorated with mosaics and frescoes, luxurious residences such as the House of the Black Salon and a food distribution center for the poor. Near Herculaneum’s marina, you will observe the somber House of Skeletons, where volcanic gases and ash trapped more than 125 people. Later, you will have the chance to see the best of Salerno in air-conditioned comfort by driving along its enchanting streets, taking in attractions such as the medieval Arechi Castle and elegant Verdi Opera House. You will also pass the Lungomare Trieste pedestrian promenade that runs along the beach-rimmed Gulf of Salerno.
