Delve into the rich history of Valencia through its centuries-old architecture and linger over lunch on your own at the Central Market. The 14th-century Serrano Towers flank the arched opening that once served as the main entry to walled Valencia, and as you will discover, the surrounding area is filled with Baroque palaces, Romanesque façades and castle-like Gothic edifices. Then there is the Valencia Cathedral, whose extraordinary Gothic interior features two priceless paintings by Goya. The Silk Exchange is another Gothic marvel. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site for being a beautiful illustration of the power and wealth during Valencia’s golden age of commerce in the 15th century. The grandiose trading hall is particularly spectacular. The Central Market is even older. It presents an authentic snapshot of daily life, as it is always bustling with locals. The aromas wafting through the air and the sheer bounty of food will surely pique your appetite.
