概要
Walk through two historical neighborhoods full of shops and architectural landmarks, some dating back to antiquity such as the Ancient Agora. Over the centuries, this gathering place in the Monastiraki neighborhood has accommodated orators such as Socrates and Saint Paul and open-air markets. Monastiraki means “small monastery,” a reference to the one built there in Ottoman times, the remains of which still exist. Nearby, you will find the tiny 12th-century marble church Agios Eleftherios, which now lies in the shadow of a large cathedral. Monastiraki is even more well-known for its flea market and antique stores. Plaka, the oldest district in Athens, is now mostly pedestrian-only and a plethora shops and restaurants line its cobblestone, labyrinthine streets. Because there is so much to see and explore in Plaka, you will wander about the neighborhood independently, allowing you to concentrate on the areas that look most appealing.
