Visit an ancient monastery in the Montserrat mountain range and stop at a UNESCO World Heritage site church while enjoying a panoramic drive through Barcelona. Founded in the 12th century, the expansive monastery built on the jagged mountain Montserrat is renowned for its wooden statue of a black Virgin Mary, as St. Luke supposedly carved it. Consequently, the basilica that houses it attracts thousands of pilgrims each year. During free time, you too can browse the basilica and other buildings within the monastery complex. Lunch follows, after which you will return to Barcelona for a remarkably comprehensive drive that will pass many of its architectural gems. As you travel down the Passeig de Gràcia, the so-called Champs-Élysées of Barcelona, you will see a wealth of designer stores and Casa Battló, a UNESCO World Heritage site residence that famed architect Anton Gaudí designed. You will also pause for photos at his legendary La Sagrada Familia church.
