Enjoy a leisurely hike through Tyresta National Park and revel in the serenity while relaxing around a campfire. The park holds the largest primeval forest in southern Sweden, which is surprising as it lies only 12 miles from Stockholm, a city with nearly a million residents. While following the naturalist guide through the park’s towering spruce and pine forest, you will learn about the remarkable biodiversity of the flora and fauna. Roe deer, boars and black woodpeckers are often spotted in the hilly wilds. You may also see beard lichen hanging from tree branches, edible mushrooms on the forest floor and knight’s plume moss elsewhere. The receding ice sheet from the last Ice Age left many of the rocks polished and smooth. Few places are so serene and wonderfully preserved, and you will have hours to enjoy the pristine setting. Browsing the park’s nature center will add another dimension to your understanding of Tyresta.
