Prepare to be impressed on this two-hour panoramic intro drive around Norway’s historic Hanseatic port city. Long beloved by visitors for its jaw-dropping fjord and mountain setting, Bergen was the country’s undisputed maritime capital for centuries, and has the leftovers to prove it. You’ll drive along the old Bryggen wharf, with its rustic wooden merchant houses little changed from when the Hansa ran their trading empire from here. Even earlier, Bergen was Norway’s political hub. Passing by the handsome royal residence at Haakon’s Hall, you’ll get a sense of where the heavy banqueting happened back in the 13th-century (it’s still used for state galas today). The formidable Rosenkrantz Tower presents a stonier, more fortified face to the world. Other must-see landmarks along the route include ultra-ancient St. Mary’s Church, thought to have been built in the mid-1100s, and the far more modern Grieg Hall, home stage of the annual Bergen Music Festival. Once the drive is done, feel free to browse the town on foot, making your way back to the ship at your own pace.
