See Bergen from a number of remarkable perspectives, beginning with a scenic drive through the off-the-beaten-track neighborhood Sandviken. After a brief stop at the 19th-century Holbergskaien quay, the attention will turn to Edvard Grieg, the revered composer who was born and died in Bergen. You will visit the neo-Gothic-style New Church where he was baptized, pause to snap photos at Grieghallen – the concert hall named in honor of Grieg, who was also the philharmonic orchestra’s artistic director – and browse the Grieg exhibits within Opus 16, an elegant hotel named for the composer’s popular piano concerto in A minor. Bergen’s history will take center stage during the guided walk through Bryggen, the wharf district whose architecture reflects the city’s status as a Hanseatic League trading empire in the 14th through 16th centuries. Even though ravaged by a fire in 1955, it was rebuilt so convincingly that UNESCO deemed it a World Heritage site.
