Travel by scenic road and ferry to the island where pioneering Norwegian fiddler Ole Bull built his fairytale-like home known as Little Alhambra. Crossing through beautiful forest and fjord country south of Bergen, you’ll arrive at Buene pier for the 5-minute micro-crossing to Lysoen Island – and your tour of Ole Bull’s eccentric onion-domed and trellised summer home, now a museum. Born in 1810, Bull was a concert violinist who performed worldwide and brought early musical fame to Norway. His success and commitment to Norwegian Romanticism allowed him to transform his 175-acre island sanctuary into a fantasy kingdom of paths, ponds and gazebos in a landscape rich with exotic flora and native pine forest. Inside the Little Alhambra, you’ll watch a presentation of Ole Bull and his life as an early proponent of Norwegian independence, then have some free time to tour other rooms or enjoy an atmospheric stroll in the gardens. On the way back to Bergen, a brief stop will be made at the ruins of Lyse Abbey, Norway’s first Cistercian monastery, founded in 1146.
