Hike through some of Norway’s most unspoiled and picturesque countryside, encountering mountain lookouts and a walk behind a roaring waterfall. The brief drive up from Geiranger pier passes a tiny octagonal church and climbs through many a hairpin bend to the Hole Hytteutliege camping site. Here your hike begins on a path that zigzags its way up further up the mountainside, through pastures where straw was once gathered and transported along aerial cables to the barns nearby. In time, Storseter Waterfall will be heard – and then seen – thundering out of its rocky ledge and roaring nearly 100 feet down into a clear pool and stream below. A peak thrill is in store as you find yourself on a stone path that offers a rare behind-the-waterfall perspective on this impressive cascade. As the path descends and the terrain opens up, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of rugged mountains and emerald-green valleys. Arriving at Westeras Farm, you’ll enjoy a coffee break – and be awed by yet another stunning vantage point overlooking Geiranger and its namesake deep-blue fjord. It’s no surprise that this fjord’s sheer cliffs, lush forests and spectacular mountain backdrop have earned it a UNESCO World Heritage site designation.
