View huge numbers of sea birds on Runde Island after discovering much about their lives at the environmental center there. You will reach the island by ferry and motor coach, both of which will offer different perspectives of the surrounding natural beauty. Although only about 150 people reside year-round on Runde Island, during the summer the bird population swells to more than 100,000. Nearly 300 avian species have been sighted there, many of which you will learn about in the multi-purpose visitor center. Besides watching a documentary film on the local puffins, you will see some of the treasure salvaged from a ship that wrecked nearby in 1725. You will view countless sea birds up close after hiking to a cliff on the sea where they nest. Although the trail is steep in places, the experience will be well worth the effort. Expect to see great skuas, razorbills, kittiwakes and northern fulmars.
