Experience the Faroes’ natural beauty at its most wild on a scenic journey to the mountains, villages and waterways north of Tórshavn. Traveling by panoramic coach, you’ll pass idyllic villages and a former whaling station as you make your way northward to where a bridge crosses the narrow Sundini channel to connect Streymoy island to the smaller, more northerly island of Eysturoy. This modern bridge is not long – in fact it’s short enough to easily walk across, which you will. It’s the waters underneath that form the main attraction, roiling with spectacular eddies if the timing is right and the current and tide are in unison. Resuming your coach journey, you’ll encounter tiny Eiði, home to barely 700 souls, and cross pristine mountain terrain to even tinier Gjógv, home to fewer than 50. Enroute, you’ll enjoy thrilling views of The Giant and The Hag, two distinctive sea-stacks, and 2,893-foot Slættaratindur, highest peak in the Faroes. But the absolute stunner is Gjógv Gorge, a 617-foot, steeply rock-walled gorge that runs from the village to the ocean. Filled with seawater, it offers natural harbor for fishing boats and an incredibly photogenic spot for your travel photos.
