Cruise to the dramatic Vestmanna sea cliffs, where thousands of birds nest for the summer. The name Vestmanna means “men from the west,” supposedly a reference to the Irish monks that settled there more than 1,000 years ago. Still wild and wonderful, the area is known more for its birdlife than the village of Vestmanna, home to one of the first hydroelectric power plants in the Faroes. As you approach the craggy, weather-beaten sea cliffs, you can expect to see puffins, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes nesting among the rocks. The sounds of the birds and the rush of the sea will be mesmerizing. In time, the boat will enter a narrow, steeped-walled notch in the cliffs, where you may catch sight of sheep grazing above. You will also cruise into a small grotto, where you will be engulfed in total darkness, the dominant sound being the steady drip of moisture from the grotto ceiling.
