Gain an overall understanding of Malta by visiting signature attractions in the island’s most characteristic towns. The capital Valletta was constructed primarily as a fortification, as you will discover by viewing its defensive walls and seemingly impenetrable towers. Inland, you will find noteworthy churches such as the 19th-century Mosta Dome, which survived World War II relatively unscathed, despite several bombs falling inside and outside that simply failed to detonate. The church’s extraordinary unsupported dome is the of the world’s largest such structures. For scenic beauty, few venues compare to the Dingli Cliffs, the island’s highest point. From there, you will enjoy extraordinary views of the coast and beyond. You will also see the walled city of Mdina, the former capital of Malta. It is known as the Silent City because so many residents left when Valletta became the capital. You will discover the artistic side of Malta in Rabat by browsing a glass-blowing factory and gold market.

Helpful Hints

  • Wear casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Dress appropriately for a religious venue; shoulders and knees must be covered.
  • Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • This tour is mostly panoramic with limited optional walking at the stops. It is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Guests with mobility concerns should only participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. The interior visit at the Mosta Dome Church is about 30 minutes, but participation isn’t required. Knees and shoulders must be covered to enter religious buildings—no shorts or sleeveless shirts. Only an exterior visit of Mosta Dome is possible on Sundays. Shops are closed on Sundays, so a walking tour of Mdina will be substituted. Guests who go ashore do so with the understanding that they will be mixing with members of the general public.
