Go bird-watching in a World Wildlife Fund-protected nature reserve and join the effort to help the environment by participating in a beach clean-up. The reserve includes Burano Lake, a coastal salt pond surrounded by sand dunes and Mediterranean maquis, a type of aromatic shrubbery composed of plants that includes lavender, myrtle and wild mint. The setting is ideal for indigenous flora and fauna to flourish. Chances are, you will see a variety of birds such as flamingos, ospreys and warblers. Upon reaching a stretch of sand that rims the Tyrrhenian Sea, you will pause for a brief but satisfying beach clean-up. Discarded plastic typically washes up there, endangering the wildlife and harming the environment. After dropping off the collected plastic for recycling, you will enjoy a casual lunch, followed by free time in nearby Orbetello.
