ローマ法王の温泉

古代の街ヴィテルボで、エトルリアや古代ローマの時代から治癒効果が謳われた温泉を訪ねます。市の中心部から西へすぐの緑豊かな田園地帯に、「Terme dei Papi（ローマ法王の温泉）」があります。中世に数多くの法王がこの温泉を訪れましたが、15世紀に法王ニコラウス5世が温泉の治癒効果にあまりにも感動し、治療が必要なときにいつでも滞在できるよう、この地に豪華な宮殿を建てさせたことから、現在の名称で呼ばれるようになりました。

The baths are fed by the Bullicame spring that has inspired artists and poets for centuries. Dante references the spring in his Divine Comedy, and Michelangelo sketched drawings of the beautiful landscape. The mineral-rich waters are forced through a miles-long fracture in the earth’s crust by the pressure of carbonic gases. The salts, calcium, magnesium and other mineral compounds in the thermal waters make them highly valued for multiple therapeutic applications, including the treatment of respiratory ailments, bone and joint pain, and skin conditions.
