Visit the highlights of Berlin, some notorious, others wonderfully enriching and still others that reflect the rich history of the city, which was founded in 1183. Among them is the Berlin Wall Memorial, a hallowed place of remembrance that commemorates those who lost their lives trying to cross the wall. You will also see Brandenburg Gate, where in 1987 President Ronald Reagan famously urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall”– referring to the Berlin Wall. Not far away stands the somber Holocaust memorial, a collection of concrete pillars that honors and remembers the millions of Jewish victims of the Holocaust. After lunch on your own around Gendarmenmarkt square, you will stop at Checkpoint Charlie, the former border crossing between the East and West. Other landmarks include the Kaiser Wilhelm Church, the expansive square Alexanderplatz and the East Side Gallery, a lengthy remnant of the Berlin Wall with murals that celebrate freedom of expression.
