Drive inland to the lovely village of Saint-Emilion for an enlightening tour of its medieval downtown and to sample some of its superb wine. The area and its namesake village have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because Saint-Emilion represents a historic vineyard landscape that has survived intact. Viticulture was introduced here by the Romans and then greatly enhanced in the Middle Ages. The guide will lead you to landmarks that include a medieval marketplace, sections of the 13th-century defensive walls and the even older Monolithic Church, parts of which are subterranean. Despite all the attractions in town, Saint-Emilion is best known for wine. You will have the opportunity sample some of its premier Grand Cru Classé wines at a private tasting at a nearby vineyard. The local soil composition is filled with sand and clay, which fosters the creation of rich, savory wines, many of them from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes.
