マナウス(ブラジル)

Manaus, the “Paris of the Jungle,” stands as capital of Brazil’s state of Amazonas and offers a rich variety of culture, art, dining and nature. The former river village rests along the left bank of the Rio Negro, which merges with the mighty Amazon. Carved from the dense jungle by rubber barons in the 19th century, Manaus has become an ideal starting or ending point for visitors to the mid-Amazon region.

Riverboats are sprinkled throughout the myriad of tributaries, estuaries and small creeks, where the richest wildlife can be seen. Taking one to your hotel, to view the meeting of waters between Negro and Solimoes rivers and to swim with river dolphins, is very common (and exciting)!

In town, take time to visit the lush zoo, stunning Renaissance-style Opera House and the Customs House, prefabricated in Liverpool, England, complete with a clock tower known as “Little Big Ben.” And if relaxation is on your mind, head to the beach/museum combo.
