  • Palaces and Cascais

Sightseeing in this area would not be complete without a visit to the 18th-century palace of Queluz.

Queluz Palace was a small and modest place until the reign of Queen Maria I, who decided to transform it into her favorite residence.Like elsewhere in Europe, the Portuguese Court was trying to imitate the life style of Versailles and although there is no possible way to compare, this is certainly a lovely Portuguese manor with a very strong touch of French decoration. The visit to the interior is also a great way to learn more about 18th and 19th century Portuguese history. The park and gardens are inspired by the famous gardens of Le Nôtre.

Sintra, your next stop, is an old world village nestled in tree-clad hills. Here you will see the outside of the royal palace, with its two kitchen chimneys. One of the oldest buildings in Portugal, it has been largely reconstructed over the centuries. After a brief stop in the town square to admire the outside of this royal palace, to shop or simply soak up Sintra's ancient beauty, your excursion will continue to Cascais, where a stop will be made to admire the beautiful bay.

  • Unforgettable Old Lisbon

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal since the 13th century, is an old city whose origin is lost in the mist of past eras; where history mingles with legend, and fact with fantasy.

Join us for a drive by coach across Monsanto, Lisbon's largest park, and then proceed to one of the richest Portuguese palaces, the Ajuda Palace, which was the last royal residence before the proclamation of the republic in 1910.

The Ajuda Palace was almost entirely decorated during the second half of the 19th century by King Louis I, and his Italian princess-wife, Maria Pia, according to their own personal tastes. It is a palace of the Victorian Age; a romantic residence with a warm atmosphere which emits the feeling that it is still inhabited.Everything has been left perfectly in preparation to welcome the palace's queen and her guests. It is a cozy and familiar place, richly decorated with tapestries, fine wood parquetry, and screens. It's walls were hung with damask, portraits of the family, and more than 40,000 objects of the royal couple's personal collections.

After this journey into the last century, make your way to Alfama.Alfama is a village in the middle of the city with undying traditions and a close-knit community. It is a maze of narrow alleys and steps, with just-cleaned laundry hung on clotheslines to dry in the windows, and street vendors selling all kinds of fruit, vegetables, fish and other items. At the heart of this chaotic urban layout stands the old Romanesque cathedral - a symbol of Christianity built on the site of a former mosque in the middle of the Moorish medina.

After visiting the oldest church in Lisbon, board your coach and drive through the lower town of Baixa - an area entirely rebuilt after the very violent earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1755.Baixa is Lisbon's principal shopping district and guests who wish to, may be dropped at Rossio Square to spend time on their own before making their own way back to the ship by taxi or public transportation.

ご注意:Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes as this tour involves difficult walking over some uneven surfaces, as well as a number of steps to negotiate. On Wednesdays the "Ajuda Palace" is closed. On these days Jeronimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be visited in its place. It is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns.

  • Medieval Obidos

After a 1-hour scenic ride through the Portuguese countryside, guests will feel like they have traveled back in time as the tour arrives at the medieval town of Obidos.

The origins of this quaint, little castle town, rising majestically above the beautiful gaeiras vineyards, are obscured in history, however, may date as far back as 308 BC. It was conquered by the Portuguese in 1148.150 years later, King Diniz made the town his wedding gift to his young bride, while he was passing through, because she had admired the ramparts twining "like a ribbon around a bouquet of shining white houses."From then on, Obidos was the wedding gift given to all of Portugal's queens.

The walking tour begins by exploring the most picturesque streets and visit the 17th-century parish church of Santa Maria, whose interior has a magnificent decoration of the famous blue and white tiles. From Pillory Square, your guide will explain how you can continue exploring the narrow lanes lined with smart shops that lead the way up to the castle (now converted into a Pousada), or explore the old lookout path on top of the wall encircling the city.

Free time in Obidos offers an excellent opportunity to do some great craft-shopping or relax in one of the charming outdoor cafés while enjoying the local ambience.Reboarding the coach, you will return to Lisbon by first passing through Lisbon's main streets and avenues before reaching the highway, in conclusion, the pier.

ご注意:Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes for this tour which involves moderate to extensive walking in Obidos over a variety of surfaces, including cobblestone streets, and multiple stairs to climb. It is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns.
