  • Alicante By Trolley Train

Ride through historical Alicante in the comfort of a trolley train, admiring the architectural treasures and pausing every so often for photos in the most scenic squares downtown.

After departing from the pier, you will ride the trolley train to the center of Alicante, the vibrant capital of the province of the same name. Founded by the Romans as Lucentum or “The City of Light,” Alicante was repeated attacked by sea until defensive walls were built in medieval times. Today, remnants of the city’s early architecture still remain, especially in the Old Quarter and other areas that you will see from the comfort of the trolley train.

Be sure to look high above the city atop Benacantil Mountain, where you will spot the seemingly impenetrable Santa Barbara Castle, which the Moors built in the 10th century. Casa Carbonell is another architectural gem that dominates the port. Built in 1925 as a residence for a wealthy textile merchant, the elegant marble and sandstone building has since been divided up into luxury apartments, offices, exquisite shops and fine restaurants.

You will also pass Canalejas Park, a late 19th-century urban oasis whose gates are adorned with sculptures of lions and dogs. Massive, more than 100-year-old ficus trees shade the park’s interior and provide a welcome setting. You will pause for photos at nearby Canlejas Square, as well as Luceros Square and Puerta del Mar Square in the heart of the city before returning to the pier.

ご注意:The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the trolley train and have an able-bodied companion to assist them.

Levante beach located in the center of town is the more popular of the two, while Poniente beach, which is located at the far end of the town, is the more tranquil beach. Near the port is where you will find the old town of Benidorm, the location of the town's original settlement as a small fishing village. The main landmark here is the small white-washed church. There is also a castle in Benidorm, and from its advantageous viewpoint visitors can take beautiful photos of sweeping coastal vistas and picturesque bays. Of course, this is not the only place to see Benidorm from high above. Benidorm is now home to the largest tower in Europe, the Gran Hotel Bali, which soars to a height of 610 feet above the city. For a small fee, visitors are allowed access to the elevators that will transport them to the top of the 43rd floor where you will be afforded amazing panoramic views of the area.

Other attractions available in this area include the wildlife park of Terra Natura and Terra Mitica, a theme park full of attractions for all ages. For those who like to take advantage of shopping opportunities, Benidorm also has a wide range of shops, both within the town itself and in a shopping center located just outside of town.

  • Highlights of Alicante

Located in the heart of the Mediterranean, Alicante is a vibrant and popular Spanish resort town and during the years of Roman rule, was called Lucentum, the City of Light.

Departing from the pier by coach, you will first travel to Santa Barbara Castle for a visit. In terms of sheer size - both surface area and buildings - the Santa Barbara Castle is one of the largest in the Mediterranean region. Located atop Mount Benacantil, a rocky mass that soars nearly 600 feet above the sea and city, the Castle dominates the summit as well as a large part of the surrounding slopes. From this lofty position, visitors are treated to the best views of Alicante. Serving as a testament to its privileged location, traces of former settlements here have been found that date back to the Bronze, Iberian and Roman eras.

The castle has three clearly differentiated areas. The highest part contains the oldest remains (11th to 13th century), and of particular interest are the Baluarte de los Ingleses (Rampart of the English), the Sala Noble (Hall of Nobles) and the Governor's House. The intermediate part consists mainly of buildings that were constructed in the 16th century, namely the Room of Philip II, the Cuerpo de Guardia (Guard's Wing), the Baluarte de la Reina (Queen's Rampart), and the Patio de Armas (the garrison courtyard), along with the ruins of the ancient hermitage of Santa Barbara. The third part of the Castle was added in the 18th century and here you will find the Revellín de Bon Repós (an angular embankment) and the monument to the famous soldier from Alicante, Félix Berenguer de Marquina, who was a Captain-General in the Philippines and a Viceroy of New Mexico.

Following your visit to the Castle, your tour continues to Alicante's historical district, which is located in the area around the Calle Labradores and the Rambla de Méndez Núñez - a street that a river used to pass through. In 1833, Alicante became the capital of the province and in 1851 it was the first coastal city to be linked to Madrid by train, thus becoming the national capital's main seaport. Since 1957, more than 6 1/2 million small red, black and cream tiles on the Esplanade have formed one of the most enduring images of Alicante. The Playa del Postiguet is located at one end of the Esplanade and Canalejas Park with its Fish Market - now converted into the best exhibition hall in Alicante - at the other. During your city tour, your guide will explain to you the history of the city as you walk through the Old Quarter, passing by the Town Hall Square (interior closed on Sundays) and the Cathedral of Alicante, better known as the Church of San Nicolas de Bari. One of its most interesting features is its impressive façade, which is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Religious Baroque.

At the completion of your guided city tour, you will have free time in the Esplanada, to stroll about and shop in the many tiny stalls along the promenade, or simply relax and soak up the colorful atmosphere here before returning to the pier.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking plus any walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are steps and inclines to negotiate at Santa Barbara Castle and cobblestone surfaces in the old town. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; a hat; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.

  • Amazing Guadalest

Enjoy discovering the popular tourist town of Guadalest on this tour that takes you to this ancient military stronghold that sits perched at the top of a granite mountain.

Your tour begins with a scenic 90-minute drive that takes you past picturesque villages such as La Nucia, Polop de la Marina and Callosa d´Ensarria, all of them surrounded by a landscape that is the most beautiful in the region. Dedicated to agriculture, you will see an abundance of orange trees, avocados and nisperos.

Arriving at Guadalest, you will find one of the most emblematic tourist images of the Costa Blanca, which is undoubtedly, the picture-postcard site of the free-standing elegant bell tower and the tunnel that provides access to the old center of Castell de Guadalest. Leaving your coach behind, you will set-off with your guide on a guided walk through the village streets. The old urban center of the town is located on the top of an outcrop, which is only accessed via a tunnel hollowed into the side of the rock. The area at the top of the rock includes the bell tower, Saint Josep Castle - where the current cemetery is located, and the recently restored Orduña House which you will visit.

The Orduña House was built after the great earthquake that demolished much of the original housing in Guadalest. One half of the house is supported by the rock while the other half occupies areas over the chapels of the adjoining church. The house is constructed of timber, plaster and stone, with four levels and an attic that is reached by several small stairways. The ground floor consists of a large reception area, wine-vault, kitchen, dining room, pantries, yards, horse-stables and barn. The remaining levels are occupied by chambers and their private quarters. The library is perhaps the most interesting feature of the house, containing a total of 1265 volumes. The catalogue of the "Ancient Books" (1500-1800) consists of 589 entries. As can be seen from the book covers, the majority of the books were acquired by the lawyer Don Francisco de Paula Orduña.

On entering the state rooms, you are able to see a staircase with a font on the right hand side. This staircase leads to a private gallery, which the Orduña family used to occupy in the church, a privilege bestowed upon them by the Archbishops of Valencia.

Following your visit to Orduña House, you will have free time to further explore the village on your own before it's time to rejoin your coach for the return journey to Alicante
