イベリア半島の南端に位置し、ジブラルタル海峡を見下ろすジブラルタルは、昔の船乗りたちにヘラクレスの柱として知られていました。歴史上で、ジブラルタルはイギリス帝国海軍の重要な拠点となってきました。その地形と「ジブラルタルの岩」、そしてバーバリーエイプというサルの群れで最も良く知られています。歴史的に何度も戦場となりながら、その岩も人々も破壊されることがなかったことから、「ジブラルタルの岩のように頑健」という表現が生まれました。
