Valencia was established by the Greeks and later occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. A 15th century artistic movement here gave the world spectacular paintings, sculptures, and jewels. Today a “City of Arts and Sciences,” Valencia offers visitors remarkable samples of modern architecture, alongside such notable classics as the 13th century Cathedral and Chapel of the Holy Chalice. Built on the site of a mosque which was originally a Roman temple the Chapel contains the chalice which legend says was used by Christ at the Last Supper. For a more historic view, take in the Quart Towers, a former gate of the medieval wall, built in 1444; and Serranos Towers, a former prison surrounded by a moat and built around 1391.

Depart from the pier and settle in for a relaxing, scenic drive past Valencia's icons, starting with the Marina Real Juan Carlos. Built to host the America's Cup, the state-of-the-art marina can accommodate nearly 650 yachts.

Continuing on, you will wind through downtown Valencia, a city that the Romans founded in 137 B.C. Although spectacularly historic, it has transitioned into one of Europe's most sophisticated modern cities. That side of Valencia is best represented at the City of Arts and Sciences, a cluster of futuristic-looking buildings. Valencia's cultural hub, the "city" includes a planetarium, science museum, open-air oceanographic park and performing arts center.

Still, history is inescapable when touring Valencia. For instance, you will see a medieval cathedral built on a site El Cid dedicated to the blessed Virgin, and the twin 15th-century Quart Towers. Other highlights nearby include the lovely North Railway Station, the still-active bullring, and the ornate city hall.

Then, there's the Columbus Market, which is housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building adorned with colorful window panels and mosaics. The market presents an authentic snapshot of daily life, as it's always bustling with locals shopping for fresh delicacies.

Following your panoramic drive through Valencia, you will have nearly an hour of free time in the city center before returning to the pier.

ご注意:This tour is primarily panoramic in nature with very limited optional walking at the stops and during free time. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. • Splendors of Valencia - Panoramic Tour

From the comfort of your coach, you will see the most important monuments of beautiful Valencia on this panoramic driving tour.

Third in importance after Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 BC, but it was the Muslims who had a more detectable influence upon modern Valencia. Leaving the pier, you will enjoy views of the most modern buildings in town, all belonging to this City of Arts and Sciences.

Upon arrival in the city center, the walking tour start with the city hall. Next is La Lonja, the city's Commodity Exchange and Maritime Consulate, built in the 15th century. Typical of the modernist era is the Central Market; planned and built in the first years of the 19th century.

Other notable sights include the Cathedral and Chapel of the Holy Chalice, dating back to the 13th century and built on the site of a mosque which had, itself, replaced a Roman temple. Inside, the Chapel of the Holy Chalice contains the chalice which legend says was used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.

The tour concludes with views of the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, built between 1652 and 1667 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Abandoned, the patron virgin of Valencia; and Serranos Towers, a former prison surrounded by a moat and built around 1391.

ご注意:This tour involves some walking during the free time scheduled to allow guests time to browse the area and shops at the town center, before returning to the pier. There is also a brief walk between the drop-off/pickup-point and the city center. On Sundays the Cathedral is closed to group visits. Therefore the guide will provide outside explanations and participants may choose to visit the cathedral individually. The Central Market is closed on Sundays.

  • Valencia At a Glance & Wine Tasting

Explore the architectural diversity of Valencia through historic landmarks that include its medieval Cathedral and Central Market. Then sample several distinctive regional wines.

Depart from the pier and drive directly to the modern City of Art and Sciences for a photo stop. Valencia's cultural hub, the "city" includes a planetarium, science museum, open-air oceanographic park and stunning performing arts center. Designed by Valencia architect Santiago Calatrava, the landmark building is absolutely spectacular in size and silhouette, as it contains four different concert halls devoted to opera, ballet, music recitals and cinema.

Continuing on, you'll pass the city's bullring and lovely North Railway Station before stopping at the twin Quart Towers, which were built in the 15th century as part of Valencia's defensive walls. The remainder of the tour is mostly walking, initially over to D.O. Valencia for a wine tasting of as many as five different vintages.

The D.O. refers to the Denomination of Origin, meaning the wines were produced in the Valencia region, which consists of more than 80 wineries or "bodegas." Wine has been produced here since Neolithic times, and Valencia has become Spain's largest wine export center. Valencia's best-known wine is a traditional dessert wine made from moscatel grapes.

Following the tasting, you'll walk to the city's medieval Cathedral, built on a site El Cid dedicated to the blessed Virgin, and then over to the Central Market for an exterior visit. Incredibly, the market has occupied the same location since the 13th century. Later, you'll drive back to the pier.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 2-hours of walking, that includes negotiating some cobblestone surfaces and there will be some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites seen or visited may vary.

  • Panoramic Drive, Albufera Park & Boat Ride

Experience the diversity of the Valencian region during this tour that showcases two wonderful, yet completely different worlds: an ultra-modern cultural complex in the heart of the city, and a vast, pristine wetlands south of town.

Starting off from the pier, you'll first enjoy a panoramic drive through downtown Valencia that highlights its most iconic attractions. Founded by the Romans in 137 B.C., Valencia has transitioned into one of Europe's most sophisticated modern cities. There's no better place to behold that side of Valencia than at the City of Arts and Sciences, a cluster of futuristic-looking buildings devoted to art and culture. After a stop there for photos, you'll continue your driving tour of Valencia, before finally leaving the city behind and heading south to nearby Albufera Natural Park.

In complete contrast to urbane Valencia, Albufera is one of the most important wetland areas on the Iberian Peninsula. A slim strip of coastline protects it from the sea, and you'll find sand dunes which have formed, along with a curious Mediterranean pine forest and rich shrubbery growing in the sandy soil. Three canals (two natural and a third man-made) connect a lagoon and surrounding wetlands with the sea, and each has its own characteristic flora and fauna. In addition to the diversity of trees and plants found here, Albufera is also home to an especially large variety of birds. While there's no telling what species you'll see, you might possibly catch sight of black-winged stilts, crested coots, little-ringed plovers and countless migratory birds such as bee-eaters.

During your time here, you'll also have an exterior visit at a traditional "barraca" house within the park. The home offers a candid look at how the local residents live in harmony with nature while supporting themselves through fishing and agriculture. Afterwards, you'll gain yet another perspective of the park, by boarding a small boat and cruising the lake which is at the heart of Albufera. The largest lake in Spain, it provides an excellent habitat for both the permanent bird population and those that migrate here during the year. Following your leisurely lake cruise, you'll rejoin your coach and transfer directly back to the pier in Valencia.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking that includes some natural and uneven surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with mobility issues. Guests must be able to enter and exit the tour boat with limited assistance. Weather appropriate, casual clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

This building became the city's town hall in 1934 and today houses the municipal files and the paleontological museum.

Continue to Plaza del Mercado on both sides of which stand the Central Market. Only open in the mornings, it is one of Europe's largest covered marketplaces with a total area of 250,000 square feet. Across the street is the Lonja de los Mercaderes, or Silk Exchange.

  • Chefs Market Tour & Paella Luncheon

Meet your Chef Instructor in the Culinary Arts Kitchen for an orientation of your tour, luncheon and cooking class. You'll be shopping for the ingredients for this afternoon's paella cooking class, so you will each be assigned which product you will be buying at the Central market and receive your market bag. Following this, you'll depart from the pier for a short but panoramic drive across Valencia. Along the way you will see the newest landmark of Valencia, The City of Arts and Sciences, created by the globally revered architect Santiago Calatrava.

Before long, you'll arrive at the Central Market, a fabulously restored and vast modernistic building that is as beautiful inside as it is outside. Bathed in natural light from glass domes and colored window panels, the airy interior of one of Europe's most photographed markets encourages exploration of the produce, fish and Spanish specialty products found here. Your Chef Instructor will orient you to the market and then you will have some free time to wander throughout while the culinary team purchases many of the ingredients found in paella, a regional dish long associated with Valencia, for your afternoon demonstration.

Paella was thought to originate in Valencia and is the signature dish of this region of Spain, abundant in produce and fish. The authentic Valencia paella contains a plethora of vegetables such as artichokes, beans and tomatoes cooked over an open fire with short-grain Bomba rice that absorbs much of the smoky flavor, although the Chef Instructor may decide on this particular day to use another variety of rice, such as Xenia or Albufera. Traditionally, the meat of paella can be rabbit or chicken, or the Chef Instructor may opt for seafood.

After an hour at the market, you’ll board your coach and head to Malvarrosa Beach for a causal seaside luncheon at one of Valencia's most popular paella restaurants, La Pepica. The restaurant is located right on the promenade of the beach, so you will be dining seaside in this elegant, yet relaxed setting. Your meal will consist of authentic Valencia paella, accompanied by a variety of local appetizers or tapas, and Spanish wines. It's truly an unforgettable experience.

At the conclusion of lunch, you'll return to the ship and following a short respite, reconvene with your group for a private cooking demonstration in the Culinary Arts Kitchen. Here, you'll watch your Chef demonstrate the art of paella with the ingredients purchased earlier at the market. Your demonstration also includes the making (and tasting) of Sangria.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 90 minutes of easy to moderate walking/standing. There may be some uneven surfaces and steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The noted tour duration is approximate and includes your classroom session aboard the ship.

  • Requena Caves & Wine Tasting

From the pier, you will board a comfortable motor coach for the 90-minute drive west to Requena, one of the most beautiful towns that surround Valencia. Along the way, vast grain and grape plantations provide a picturesque background.

On arrival in Requena, you will explore the old town on foot; various churches and municipal buildings are passed along the way.

Your exploration continues into the spectacular caves, which lie directly under the old town. These caves were originally constructed in the medieval ages for grain and wine grape storage. They also served as a shelter from invading armies and battles throughout past centuries. As you trace the steps of Valencia's ancestors, the ambience of the past rises up to meet the reality of the present; it really is an unforgettable experience.

Emerging from the fascinating caves, you will make your way to the renowned and distinguished wine cellar, Pago de Tharsys Cellar. Here, you will enjoy a delicious wine tasting, including appetizers of local cold cuts.

Following lunch in a local restaurant, it is time to make the trip back to your ship.

ご注意:Guests must be a minimum of 18 years old in order to participate in the wine tasting. As this excursion involves extensive walking over cobblestone streets, negotiating steps at the caves, and corridors and tunnels at the wine cellar, is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. The order of sights visited may vary.
