バレンシアはギリシャ人によって設立され、その後は古代カルタゴ人、ローマ人、西ゴート族、アラブ人によって支配されてきました。15世紀にここでおきた芸術運動は世界に絵画や彫刻、宝飾品の傑作をもたらしました。現在「芸術と科学の都市」バレンシアでは、現代建築を代表する傑作と並んで、13世紀の大聖堂や聖杯教会などの歴史的建築が見られます。もとはローマの寺院であったモスクのあとに建てられた教会には、キリストが最後の晩餐で使ったと伝えられる聖杯があります。さらに史跡をご覧になりたい方には、1444年に建てられた中世の壁の門の名残りであるクアルトの塔や、堀に囲まれたかつての刑務所で1391年頃に建てられたセラーノスの塔もお勧めです。
