Travel to the ancient city of Viterbo, where thermal springs have been celebrated for their healing properties since the time of the Etruscans and Romans. In the lush countryside just west of the city center, you will experience Terme dei Papi, the “Thermal Baths of the Popes.”While the baths were visited by a succession of popes in medieval times, they received their current name in the 15th century when Pope Nicholas V was so impressed by the curative effects of the waters that he had a grand palace built on the site, so he could stay there whenever he required treatment.

The baths are fed by the Bullicame spring that has inspired artists and poets for centuries.Dante references the spring in his Divine Comedy, and Michelangelo sketched drawings of the beautiful landscape. The mineral-rich waters are forced through a miles-long fracture in the earth’s crust by the pressure of carbonic gases. The salts, calcium, magnesium and other mineral compounds in the thermal waters make them highly valued for multiple therapeutic applications, including the treatment of respiratory ailments, bone and joint pain, and skin conditions.

  • An Insider View of the Vatican

This tour offers the rare opportunity to enter exclusive areas of Vatican City that are off limits to the general public.Your journey begins with an early-morning drive to Rome.Upon arrival, you'll have approximately 3 1/2 hours of free time to shop, sightsee, and enjoy lunch on your own.Rejoining your coach, you'll then drive to the Vatican, where your private tour commences at the beautiful Bronze Gate, which contains many outstanding Bernini masterpieces.Once inside, you will visit the Vatican Museums and the St. Peter’s Basilica, including the most interesting “off the beaten track” hidden corners, as well as special sections closed to the general public.

First by special permission, you will have the unusual privilege of visiting the Pope's private place of worship, the Niccolina Chapel (since the Paolina Chapel is under restoration); under the pontificate of Nicholas V (1447-55) the Vatican became a court of the muses; the Pope was really an art lover and in 1448 asked the famous painter Fra Angelico to embellish His private Chapel, the Cappella Niccolina.Three walls are covered with frescoes representing scenes from the lives of St. Stephen and St. Lawrence, two archdeacons who had been widely venerated in Rome since the early Middle Ages.Fra. Angelico was able to accomplish this considerable amount of work only with the assistance of a large workshop, including Benozzo Gozzoli.

Continue your exclusive tour to the Bramante Staircase, a double helix staircase. This staircase is a double helix, having two staircases, and allowing people to ascend without meeting people descending - the main purpose of the Bramante original was to allow uninterrupted traffic in each direction.A canopy located above provides the necessary light to illuminate the stairs. The Bramante Staircase features granite doric columns and a herringbone paving pattern. The staircase was built to allow Pope Julius II to enter his private residence while still in his carriage, since walking up the several flights in heavy papal vestments would have been onerous.

Next you will admire the Carriage Museum, founded by Paul VI in 1973.It is located in a large room under the Square Garden and contains saddles, carriages, automobiles and sedan chairs used by the various popes.Curiosities include some 19th-century carriages, a model of Vatican City’s first train engine (1929) and a Berlin built for Leo XII, used by popes for gala occasions until the tenure of Pius XI.

From here you will then visit the Pinacoteca, commissioned by Pius IX in 1931 to house a collection of paintings. Many of the paintings on exhibit were taken to Paris by Napoleon in 1797, but returned to Italy after the Congress of Vienna (1815).The works, covering a period from the Middle Ages to 1800, are set in chronological order in eighteen rooms.

Among the many masterpieces, you will see the Raphael's Crowning of the Virgin, Madonna of Foligno and Transfiguration, Leonardo's St. Jerome and the Deposition from the Cross by Caravaggio. After this amazing viewing, proceed to another "off limits" section of the Vatican Museums - the Sala degli Ori where precious Etruscan jewels dating back to the 8th Century BC are beautifully displayed. Finally, continue to St Peter's Treasure room where you will be amazed by a collection of precious objects given for consecration of the Basilica.

ご注意:This tour includes over 4 hours of strenuous guided walking, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. The guided portion of the tour covers over 1.5 miles over cobblestone and uneven surfaces, plus an additional mile from the parking area to the Vatican. The tour sequence as requested by the Vatican, will require guests to retrace their steps through areas already viewed when visiting the Carriage Museum.

The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns.Guests are required to wear suitable attire covering the knees and shoulders for the visit inside the Basilica or the Vatican Museum. No shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops or other revealing clothing will be permitted.Men should wear jackets.A sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.Lunch is on your own and there is a cafeteria on site.

Certain areas on the tour, such as the Niccolina Chapel or Papal Treasures, may on occasion be closed for Vatican functions. On those dates they will be substituted with other areas of the Vatican considered equally private and exclusive. The tour sequence may vary.

This tour cannot operate on Sundays or Catholic holidays. The Vatican is a very popular attraction in Rome that draws large numbers of visitors.Neither Regent Seven Seas Cruises or the local tour operator have any control over crowds at the venues.Given this, guests should be prepared to wait in lines and the tour scheduling can only be approximate.

This tour must be purchased no later than 3 days prior to the operating date.Cancellations made within 3 days or less are subject to a 100% cancellation penalty.
