Cartagena is a Spanish Mediterranean city with more than 2,500 years of history. Each corner, street and square offers travelers monumental examples of its splendorous historical past. The origins of the city are shown at the Punic Wall, which marks the foundation of the city by the Carthaginians in 227 BC. Cartagena has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the eighteenth century.

  • Panoramic La Manga & Cartagena

Behold the stunning natural beauty in the seaside resort area of La Manga, and then return to Cartagena for a tour of its urban delights.

Depart from the pier and begin driving east out of Cartagena. Before long, you will come upon La Manga Club Principe Felipe, one of Europe's most extraordinary golf complexes. As you drive past this spectacular property, you will see its emerald-green golf courses, exquisite hotel and lovely hilltop communities. The lifestyle and setting are so inspirational that La Manga has repeatedly been honored as the European Golf Resort of the Year.

The name La Manga, which means "arm" or "sleeve," refers to the signature strip of sand nearby that stretches for more than 13 miles, closing off part of the Mediterranean to form a massive saltwater lake. In the 16th century, it was an open bay, but sedimentation eventually formed the thin but lengthy sand bar and the resulting lake.

The views of La Manga are superb in every direction, and during some free time at Cavanna Beach, you may stroll about, taking photos or simply find a quiet spot to sit and relax. Later, you will return to Cartagena, a city that dates back to 227 B.C., when the Carthaginians settled here. They chose the area because it was surrounded by five hills and somewhat easy to defend. Still, over time, the Romans, Visgoths and Muslims all conquered Cartagena, until a heavily fortified castle was built atop the highest of the hills. After viewing Cartagena's most notable landmarks, you will return to the pier.

ご注意:This tour is panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at the stops. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • Cartagena By Trolley Train

See the highlights of Cartagena by trolley train, a delightful mode of transportation that will take you to historically important landmarks and a scenic park with breathtaking views.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy an enlightening and wonderfully panoramic ride through Cartagena on a trolley train. The city dates back to 227 B.C., when the Carthaginians settled here. They chose the area because it was surrounded by five hills and somewhat easy to defend. Nevertheless, the Romans, Visgoths and Muslims all conquered Cartagena, until the heavily fortified Concepción Castle was built atop the highest of the hills.

Considering the city’s long history, there is plenty to see from the comfortable trolley train. The highlight from a historical standpoint is the ancient Roman theatre, which can seat up to 6,000 spectators. Since being restored in 2003, the theatre holds performances once again. The building in ruins adjoining the theatre is Santa Maria Cathedral, which was heavily damaged in Spain’s Civil War.

Not far away, you will pass the multi-domed, exceptionally ornate town hall. Although beautiful now, the modernist building suffered considerable structural damage shortly after being built in 1907 because it was constructed on unstable land reclaimed from the sea.

One of the most picturesque spots in Cartagena is Torres Park, where you will pause for photos. Being on a hilltop, it offers sweeping views of the bay, Old Town and the countryside beyond. In time, the trolley train will return to your starting point at the pier.

ご注意:The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the trolley train and have an able-bodied companion to assist them.

  • Wellness - the Curative Muds of Mar Menor

Just north of Cartagena lies the inland sea called Mar Menor, which is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow sandbar known as La Manga. This unique geological feature was formed when volcanic reefs at either end of the bay impeded the sand carried by the sea currents, forming a strip of dunes and beaches. Natural channels allow the Mediterranean to feed Mar Menor, and the high level of salt in the water combined with long hours of sunlight have created the largest open-air mud therapy retreat in Europe.

Take a relaxing stroll along the seaside promenade and learn the many benefits of the mud baths. Rich in minerals such as magnesium, calcium and sodium, the waters and muds of Mar Menor offer many curative properties, including relief from arthritis, gout and other ailments. • Murcia - the Provincial Capital

Enjoy a half-day of sightseeing in Murcia, the capital of the province. Settled by the Moors in the 9th century, and conquered by the Christians in the 13th century, this bustling city features a wonderful array of architectural delights.

It's a 1-hour scenic drive through the foothills of the Sierra de Carrascoy to reach Murcia. Along the way, a stop will be made at the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Fuensanta (the Patron of Murcia). Built at the end of the 17th century, the location of the Sanctuary offers up some wonderful views of the city and surrounding land. An order of nuns still resides and works at the Sanctuary and twice per year, there is a pilgrimage here from the nearby city.

Continuing on, you will make your way into the city, first visiting the Cathedral of Murcia (an interior visit is not always possible). Construction was begun in 1394, on the grounds where an Arab mosque once stood. Although it was officially completed in 1467, work continued up until the 18th century which is why it incorporates a variety of artistic styles. For example, the interior is Gothic and the façade is Baroque. The Cathedral also features a bell tower that reaches a height of 311 feet, making it the tallest of its kind in Spain, and taking over two hundred years to build. Also found here is the Chapel of Los Vélez, which has a flamboyant Gothic style and a star-shaped vault.

From the Cathedral, you will travel on foot to the Casino of Murcia. Inaugurated in 1847, the Royal Casino of Murcia is a private club which follows the traditional ways from the 19th century. From its inception, it has been one of the central protagonists of the Murciana social life. An extensive rehabilitation of this historical building was carried out between the years of 2006- 2009, which restored the Casino to its former glory. One of the most notable features is the front of the building, which displays a very modernist influence; however, the highlight of the Casino is without doubt, its magnificent ballroom that is decorated with spectacular chandeliers.

At the conclusion of your visit to the Casino, you will have some free time to stroll about the city center before re-joining your coach for the journey back to the pier in Cartagena.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a scenic drive east to La Manga, one of the most popular coastal areas in all of Spain. It's no wonder. The setting is absolutely spectacular, as La Manga is a thin strip of land about 22 miles long that separates the Mediterranean Sea from La Manga del Mar Menor, which is known as "The Sandbar of the Minor Sea." You'll spend nearly three hours on lovely Cavanna Beach, doing whatever you please. You might swim in the warm shallow waters of lagoon which is also known as the Great Pool or Little Sea. Watersports are plentiful and even if you don't join in the fun, it's entertaining to watch the water-skiers, jet-skiers and windsurfers zipping through the crystalline waters. If you have nothing on your mind but relaxation, you might lie in the sun, stretch out under an umbrella and read, or dine in one of the beachside cafés. At the appointed time and location, you'll rejoin your coach and make the scenic drive back to Cartagena. • Cartagena Tapas Tour

Stand in the ruins of an ancient Roman theater that remarkably was discovered somewhat recently, and then enjoy a tasting of small-plate specialties at several tapas bars downtown.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Cartagena’s ancient Roman theater, which amazingly was hidden for centuries until excavations began in 1988. While browsing the adjoining museum, you may see virtual images of the theater in Roman times and better understand its design and meticulous restoration. Upon entering the open-air theater, you will most likely be awed by its size, as the structure can hold as many as 7,000 spectators.

You will then walk to the city center to visit the first of several tapas bars. While the origin of tapas is unknown, it may refer to an old custom of serving drinks with a slice of ham on top to keep out sand on windy days. Tapa literally means “lid.”Others believe Spain’s small-plate specialties can trace their origin to King Alfonso X, who in the 13th century became ill and could only eat small amounts of food. The trend supposedly caught on.

Whatever the origin, you will enjoy a selection of delicious tapas while the guide explains why the choices are so characteristic of Cartagena’s cuisine. There is really no end to the varieties of tapas, which are usually served in Spain before lunch and between work and dinner. The exact tapas will reflect the local ingredients that are freshest and in season.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 3 hours of walking/standing; there will be some inclines and cobblestone surfaces/steps to negotiate. Founded by the Carthaginians in the year 227 BC, the city rapidly became known as a naval city due to its large trading port area, which is still used today. Due to its five surrounding hills which have protected it through the ages, it was always a well-defended stronghold.

  • Walking Tour of Cartagena

Delve into Cartagena's almost 3,000 years of history on this walking tour that visits several of its most notable and historic sites. Due to its strategic location and protection from the 5 military defensive hills that surround it, the city has throughout time, been a very important port area.

Meeting your guide at the pier, your tour begins with a 20-minute walk to the House of Fortune. Designed to give visitors an insight into how families lived during Roman times, you will be able to view the various rooms of the house, ranging from the meeting room to the banquet rooms and the bedrooms. On display are crockery, coins and decorative items, all helping to give you a real glimpse into how life was during this period of time.

From the House of Fortune, you will next make your way on foot to Conception Castle. Situated on one of the five hills that served to protect the city, a panoramic lift (only 8 per car so there may be some delays) brings you up to the terrace roof of Conception Castle, where you will be treated to amazing views over the city. On this site is housed an Interpretation Center, which relates the history of Cartagena for visitors. Built on the remains of the castle that shares the same name (or is more popularly known as "Castle of the Ducks"), the Center is now an integral part of Torres Park.

Traveling back down the hill, you will continue on foot to the town hall square where your guide will give you a brief introduction about the square and the surrounding buildings. Following that, you will have some free time in the main shopping street which is filled with a wealth of shops, cafés and restaurants. Take some time to stroll about and do some shopping or enjoy some refreshment before rejoining your guide.

Your guided tour resumes with a walk to Decumanus, an old Roman road where you can see how the Roman baths were constructed and what life was like in a Roman city. Following your outside visit here, your guide will escort you back to the pier.

We will then make our way back to the port.
