Bilbao straddles the Bilbao or Nervión River some 15 miles from the Cantabrian Seacoast. An industrial city, the metropolitan area ranks among Spain's most important commercial and financial centers. Proximity to the sea and early discovery of vast mineral deposits led to the development of the port. The modern city center is El Ensanche (literally "the expansion"). Possibly the newest source of great local pride is the remarkable Guggenheim Museum-Bilbao.

  • Panoramic Bilbao

Follow the Nervión River into Bilbao to admire landmarks like its unusual transporter bridge and the Guggenheim Museum, a modern marvel of architecture on this mostly panoramic tour.

Depart from the pier and start driving towards downtown Bilbao, an energetic city on the Nervión River. Following the river's course, you will soon come upon the Great Biscay Transporter Bridge, a towering latticework of metal that opened in 1893. Ever since, it has been carrying people - and now cars, across the river in an open gondola suspended from the bridge high above. If the design reminds you of the Eiffel Tower, it's no coincidence; the bridge's architect was a student of Gustave Eiffel.

Next, you will drive up Mount Artxanda, one of the two mountains within the city limits. During a photo stop here, you will have an excellent panoramic view of Bilbao, one of the great cities of the Basque Country. While Bilbao's roots are definitely industrial, in the past two decades it has become passionately devoted to the arts. This cultural drive has been largely fueled by the celebrated Guggenheim Museum, where you will enjoy a brief amount of free time to take some exterior pictures and walk about.

Designed by Frank Gehry, the museum is clad in swirls of titanium, limestone and huge glass panes. Even before opening in 1997, it was hailed as the greatest building of its time. The Guggenheim is certainly the most photographed structure in Bilbao and after meandering about its grounds you will understand the attraction. Afterwards, you will return to the pier via a scenic route through downtown.

ご注意:This tour is mostly panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at the stops. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

Depart the pier for the drive to Hondarribia, or Fuenterrabia. Located near the French border, this town is divided into two parts. The upper section of town is a Medieval district featuring small alleys and old houses with carved eaves and wonderful balconies. The lower section is home to the fishermen's quarter. During a brief walking tour in the upper section, you will see the historic Parador Hotel, a splendid Medieval building that once served as a defense tower against French invasions.

You will also see the theatre and luxury hotel named after the Queen.

  • Wellness - Painted Forest Walk, Guernica and Tapas

Become immersed in all things Basque by walking through a forest that a Basque artist painted, visiting the former Basque capital and dining on tapas, a Basque specialty.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a meandering, wonderfully scenic drive inland to the Oma Painted Forest, one of Europe’s most unusual natural environments. Here, in a pine forest in the Oma Valley, Basque artist Agustin Ibarrola has painted various shapes and figures on the trees, turning them into colorful totem poles of sorts. Some of the shapes are geometric, others anthropomorphic, while still others reflect animal forms.

As you walk through the forest, you will notice that from certain perspectives, the shapes look random, but if you stand in different spots the intended images clearly come into view. The shapes often spill over onto several trees. It’s one of the world’s most unusual outdoor art installations and is meant to demonstrate the relationship between people and nature.

Continuing on, you will next visit Guernica, the former Basque capital. The city was heavily bombed during the Spanish Civil War and was almost completely obliterated. Picasso famously captured the horrifying event in “Guernica,” perhaps his most recognizable painting. Reproductions of it are painted outdoors throughout the city.

Today, Guernica stands as a symbol of peace, as you will discover while touring the city. You will also enjoy snacking on tapas, which the Basques typically call “pintxos.”These small-plate appetizers will be made with ingredients that reflect what’s freshest and seasonal.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 4.4 miles of walking over uneven terrain. It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Enjoy an invigorating four-mile walk, starting at a beautiful beach rimmed by cliffs and continuing on to an old fishing village that reflects the Basque way of life.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely drive to Gorrondatxe Beach, a rather remote stretch of sand bordered by steep cliffs of volcanic origin. The rock’s Lutetian-era strata is clearly visible, which is why geologists often study the cliff faces.

You can expect it to be an invigorating experience as you follow a coastal path past attractions such as the 18th-century Aixerrota Windmill, which has been converted into a restaurant. • Torre Loizaga & Old Quarter

Marvel at the vintage luxury automobiles in a Rolls-Royce Museum tucked away in a remote mountain fortress, and then meander through the vibrant old quarter of Bilbao.

Departing from the pier, it's a scenic drive inland through the enchanting mountains that define Spain's beautiful Basque country. In time, you'll come upon majestic Concejuelo Castle, a treasure hidden away off the main road. What's even more remarkable is that the estate hosts a Rolls-Royce Museum built near its tower, the Torre Loizaga.

This little-known, yet amazing collection of luxury automobiles contains more than 40 vintage Rolls-Royces, including a 1910 Silver Ghost and a legendary Phantom IV, of which only 18 were ever made, strictly for heads of state such as Queen Elizabeth. To complement the priceless Rolls-Royces, there are more than 25 other makes of luxury cars, including a Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Testarossa and several rare Bentleys.

After you have filled your head with thoughts of owning one of these beauties, it's time to resume your tour and travel back to Bilbao for a walking tour of its old quarter, known as the Casco Viejo. It's a wonderfully vibrant district full of historical monuments, tapas bars and colorful shops.

Following your walking tour of the old quarter, you'll rejoin your coach and transfer directly back to the pier.

ご注意:This tour includes approximately 3-hours of moderate to strenuous walking/standing. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Weather appropriate clothing; sun caps; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
